Why Your Radiators and Heating System Need Servicing — Not Just the Boiler
A serviced boiler isn't enough — radiators, valves, pipework and water quality all affect how well your home heats up.
Most homeowners know that their boiler needs servicing, but from our experience, far fewer people think about the rest of the heating system. The boiler is only one part of the system. Your radiators, pipework, valves, controls and water quality all play a major role in how well your home heats up.
We often get called out to homes where the boiler has been serviced, but the radiators are still cold at the bottom, noisy, slow to heat, or uneven from room to room.
Common heating problems we see

In Mid Kent homes, especially during colder months, we regularly see:
- Radiators cold at the top or bottom
- Rooms taking too long to warm up
- Noisy pipework or gurgling radiators
- Stuck radiator valves
- Poor circulation
- Sludge inside radiators
- Heating systems that are working harder than they should
Many of these problems are not caused by the boiler itself. They are caused by the condition of the wider heating system.
Why radiators need attention

Over time, heating systems can collect sludge, rust particles and debris. This can settle inside radiators, restrict water flow and make the system less efficient.
A radiator that is hot at the top but cold at the bottom may have sludge sitting inside it. A radiator that is cold at the top may simply need bleeding. A radiator that does not heat at all may have a valve, airlock or circulation issue.
Servicing beyond the boiler

A proper heating system check can include:
- Bleeding radiators
- Checking radiator valves
- Looking for cold spots
- Checking system pressure
- Inspecting visible pipework
- Checking for leaks or corrosion
- Assessing whether inhibitor is needed
- Advising on flushing or cleaning where required
From our experience, small heating problems are best dealt with early. Ignoring them often means the boiler has to work harder, the house heats unevenly, and energy use increases.
Our advice

Do not wait until the coldest week of the year to discover that half your radiators are not working properly. A seasonal heating check can make a big difference, especially before winter.
At Cousin's Plumbing and Heating Kent, we look at the heating system as a whole, not just the boiler. Our aim is to help your system run efficiently, safely and reliably.
